American: - " ... all the Pollock jokes we used to hear. They were rampant during my school years of the sixties..."
How "Pollock jokes" appeared and seized: People from Poland and Lithuania emigrated to America even before Irish, because of annexation of their country by Russia. Thats why we have heroes from Poland and Lithuania in American Revolution as Lithuanian born Tadeusz Kosciuszko founder of West Point Academy - or Polish Kazimierz_Pułaski. At that time it was fashionable for Lithuanians to speak Polish as for Russians - French.
Definitely there were a lot of solders from Poland in revolutionary army too. But most of the army(majority) were English and Germans. Historically happened - they hated catholics. Polish were all catholics, and as all catholics minorities - including Irish, Italians, Latinos, they were object of the humiliation by majorities - German protestants and English separatists (reformism started by criminal wife killer Henry VIII of England ) Polish spoke poor English since that language is Slavic and not from the group of languages were English and German belongs. So they were kind of isolated and bullied by majorities and that how jokes appeared.
Land is the main capital in capitalistic system. Many people live in prosperity because their ancestors distributed native land when other (Indians, catholics, Africans, Latinos...) were eliminated from acquiring that most valuable capital. In present progressive views, those descendants(if they are still using that land) suppose to apologize to all terrorized by their arrogant ancestors.
Polish jokes diminished probably after Polish men was in space way before American-African, German or English-English Mirosław Hermaszewski (see also Timeline_of_space_travel_by_nationality) and after Polish men became the Pope - first non-Italian at the times when Polish economy was at the good tenth place in the all world.
Many-many Americans, have all or part of polish blood in their veins. What is the polish saying: "Doesn't matter what they are talking - it's important that they are talking"? |
